A lawsuit filed by former Nasty Gal
employee, Aimee Concepcion, alleges that she and three other female
employees were terminated after becoming pregnant, as well as one male
who was about to take paternity leave. The complaint was filed on March 10 after Concepcion was let go last year. The documents filed by Concepcion state that "Plaintiff's employment with Nasty Gal was doomed from the minute she found out she was pregnant."
Since the story was originally broken by Jezebel, Nasty Gal has responded to the allegations claiming "The accusations made in the lawsuits are false, defamatory and taken completely out of context. The layoffs in question were part of a larger restructuring of departments we completed over nine months ago. The lawsuits are frivolous and without merit."
Whether the allegations are true or not, the controversy puts popular clothing brand Nasty Gal and its founder Sophia Amoruso in an awkward place. As the author of the book #Girlboss, Sophia has pushed to promote the success of women in the workplace. To learn that in practice her own company may not adhere to those same ideals is a disappointment. And while Nasty Gal bills itself as a destination for "free-thinking girls," it's time to make sure that all women have freedom both inside and outside the workplace. Every woman should have the right to choose both a career and children.
