VAN NUYS — Authorities Friday identified a young man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting at the end of a car chase in Van Nuys.
Oscar Anaya, 22, of Pacoima died at a hospital following the shooting, which was reported just after 4 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Sherman Way and Kester Avenue. No officers were hurt.
A gang unit from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Van Nuys Station had begun following a gray car, which officers believed was stolen, as it was being driven eastbound on Sherman Way from Sepulveda Boulevard, according to Officer Tony Im.
During the pursuit, someone inside the vehicle opened fire on the pursuing police car, prompting officers to call for backup, Im said. They continued following the car until it crashed into a light pole a short distance away at the intersection of Sherman Way and Kester Avenue, he said.
The suspect got out of the car and an officer-involved shooting occurred, Im said, adding that two handguns were recovered.
Two women inside the car with the suspect were taken into custody for questioning
